Helping Veterans… And Beyond

The Milwaukee Center for Independence (MCFI) operates a commercial kitchen in Veterans Manor. Here participants in MCFI’s Food Service Training program prepare thousands of meals for residents of Veterans Manor as well as children in the Milwaukee Public School system.

An industrial kitchen serves multiple uses, including a training ground for MCFI job trainees.

MCFI focuses its efforts on assisting individuals and families with special needs and barriers to success to reach their highest levels of independence. “We have developed increasingly better ways to help clients break through apparent limits to their abilities and achieve their potential,” says Howard L. Garber, Ph.D., President of MCFI.

The MCFI Food Service Training, a division of the organization’s Hospitality Academy, teaches clients how to work in community jobs within the food industry. The training curriculum was developed from the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) ServSafe Principles guiding food service workers in today’s industry. The program includes both classroom training and daily functional work activity.
