A Dream Realized

When Veterans Manor opened its doors on Memorial Day 2011, the dreams of 52 veterans for a real home became a reality.

Too many troops come home from combat only to face more battles: homelessness, unemployment, addiction and/or isolation.

Veterans Manor helps these veterans rebuild their lives by providing them with a place they are proud to call home — along with the support services they need to acquire job skills, access veterans’ benefits, fight substance abuse and adjust to an illness or disability.

With its bright, modern one-bedroom apartments, Veteran’s Manor provides veterans with a safe, stable and affordable home. Onsite services and other amenities include free internet, a workout room, laundry, large community room and convenient access to public transportation and the Milwaukee VA Medical Center.

One of the first lessons learned in the military is “Leave no comrade behind.”

Yet many veterans find themselves “left behind” when they leave the service. The VA estimates that 107,000 veterans are homeless on any given night and that over the course of a full year, approximately twice that many will experience homelessness.

Veterans Manor is a bricks and mortar testament to Milwaukee’s commitment to that same motto – to leave no veteran behind on the streets of America. Every time a resident of Veterans Manor walks through their front door they are afforded the dignity and respect they have earned and deserve.

Veterans Manor is a dream realized for 52 Milwaukee veterans but it can, and should, become a model for serving veterans across this country.
